Francisco Negrin is an award-winning stage director, based in Barcelona and working at major opera houses worldwide as well as in major events, film, popular music and other media.





Latest production:



The Snow Queen, a new opera by Hans Abrahamsen, had its world premiere in Copenhagen in October 2019 at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. Designed by Palle Steen Christensen integrating an LED pixel mapping installation by Playmodes studio, with Costumes by Louis Desiré and lighting by Bruno Poet and Matt Daw.



Francisco's production of Jérusalem, by Verdi opened in Bonn in January 2016 and has just been revived in Bilbao in November 2019, where it was the Spanish premiere of the piece.

One of only two or three productions of the piece ever staged in modern times.

Designed by Paco Azorín and Domenico Franchi, with lighting by Thomas Roscher and video by Joán Rodón

It was an unexpected success for such an unknown piece. It sold out at every performance




Francisco directed the Opening ceremony of the Panamerican games Lima 2019, designed by Thanassis Demiris, Pepe Corzo and Luke Halls, produced by Balich Worldwide Shows. 200 performers participated in this event that had a huge impact in the country, as it was watched by 7 out of 10 Peruvians . Francisco also was creative supervisor for the Closing and for teh opening and closing ceremonies of the Para Panamerican games.


Francisco's production of Il Trovatore that opened in Monte Carlo in 2017, and was then seen at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, had a very succesful third run in July 2019 at the Tetaro Real in Madrid.

One of the performances was broadcast live on national television as well as on public screens in cities and towns all over the country.





Salome by Richard Strauss, in a revival of the production Francisco directed in Valencia in 2010, opened on February 17th 2018 in Bilbao, at ABAO.

Designed by Louis Desiré, Lighting by Bruno Poet. Conducted by Erik Nielsen, with Emily McGee and Egils Silins, Daniel Brenna and Ildikó Komlósi.

The production will then go to Houston in 2020, where it will be conducted by Eun Son Kim, with Eva Maria Westrbroek and Ryan McKinney.

Francisco has concieved, written and directed one of the largest shows ever:

The opening ceremony of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games

They took place in the summer of 2017 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Produced by Balich Worldwide Shows, the event featured over 6000 performers

and an 11 meter deep, 25 meter wide chamber especially built into the stadium floor .




In 2017 Francisco directed the shows of the Dubai World Cup

Produced by Balich Worldwide Shows , the performance area was 1 kilometer wide"

The event included 87 synchronised drones with LEDs and a giant fireworks show by Groupe_F 



July 31st 2016 saw the revival of Francisco's hugely 2013 production of

Il Trovatore at the Macerata Sferisterio Festival.

Intimissimi On ice - OPERAPOP . Opened on 20 September 2014 in Verona.

A spectacular ice-based event in the roman arena at Verona, combining opera, symphonic pop and high tech visuals with renounded opera singers and world and olympic champions Carolina Kostner and Stéphane Lambiel among others.

The show featured pop stars Pharell Williams and Anastacia






Mozart's MITRIDATE opened at the court theatre at Drottningholm (Stockholm) Sweden, in August 2014.

It has been a resounding success with both audience and press.

THAÏS opened to long standing ovations at Theater Bonn in May 2014.

Conducted by Stefan Blunier, with Nathalie Manfrino and Eevez Abdulla and Mirko Roschkowski triumphant in the main roles .

Designed by Rifail Ajdarpasic and Ariane Unfried, with lighting by Thomas Roscher.













ALCINA opened in Oslo in Jan 2014.

Led by Bjarte Eike and Christopher Bucknall, with Nicole Heaston and Tuiva Semmingsen.

Designed by Louis Desiré, with lights by Mikki Kunttu, flying and movement by Ran Braun.

It will next be seen in Copenhagen in February 2015

Verdi's Il Trovatore opened in summer2013 at the Macerata opera festival in Italy,

in the beautiful Sferisterio arena. Designed by Louis Desiré and lit by Bruno Poet, the show was a resounding success!






Dec 15 2012 saw the première of Negrin's innovative and spectacular new production of

The Cunning Little Vixen By Janacek, in Copenhagen, at the new opera house.

The show boasted groundbreaking designs by Es Devlin, sophisticated video art and projection mapping by Luke Halls,

origami-like costumes by Carol Bailey, lighting by Bruno Poet and choreography by Ana Yepes.




The DVD and Bluray editions of Francisco's Amsterdam production of I Puritani have been released by Opus Art and are available worldwide, including on





Francisco's production of Werther,

seen in San Francisco in 2010 opened in Chicago On November 10th 2012,

Starring Matthew Polezani and Sophie Koch, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.






Verdi's Macbeth, in the production by Francisco originally premiered at the Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg,

opened on April 20 at the Opera in Monte Carlo

with Maria Guleghina and Lado Ataneli in the main roles. It has again been incredibly well recieved.





The second production Francisco has directed of Handel's Rinaldo opened at Chicago Lyric Opera, to rave reviews and standing ovations!

Francisco Negrin's previous production was the very successful revival of his L'Arbore di Diana from Barcelona, in Montpellier , in November.

The DVD of L'Arbore di Diana has now been released by Dynamic, and is available worldwide. The show was recorded at the Liceo in Barcelona with the original cast.
